Putting your water heater on a timer can also lower your electric bill dramatically. Many experts recommend setting the temperature to 120°F (49°C) to save money and prevent the water from scalding; this temperature may not be hot enough for dishwashers, however, so you may want to consider a dishwasher with a booster heater. In addition, make sure that your water heater is the right size; you're wasting money if you're heating a lot of water that you won't use.
You can organize and shop by pricing at YOUR individual usage level, which allows you to shop and compare energy plans based on the rates you’ll actually see appear on your bill, inclusive of taxes and hidden fees. You won’t be misled by the “teaser rates” tied with higher usage levels that many homes never experience, as their usage level never reaches that pricing tier.

The ENERGY STAR is an accolade given by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to a product that meets the rigorous energy-efficiency guidelines set forth by the U.S. government in order to reduce greenhouse emissions. An ENERGY STAR certified room air conditioner uses about 15% less energy than non-certified models. That 15% could save you around $85 over the unit’s lifetime. To learn more, go to energystar.gov
The SCC issued an order in a November 2014 ruling in the company’s biennial review that left base rates unchanged. Based on a review of 2012-2013 earnings, the SCC also required a $5.8 million refund credit to customers over a six-month period beginning in late January 2015. During the 2015 session of the Virginia General Assembly, legislation was approved that will keep Appalachian’s base rates (which comprise about 60 percent of the bill) unchanged until at least 2020.

One thing about drying clothes in the house – if the house is sealed enough to be energy efficient – you are releasing a lot of moisture into the house. When I lived in Europe, the clothes drying setup tended to be in the attic in older houses (beyond the insulation) or in a basement where casement windows could be opened to vent the moisture. Also, houses without clothes dryers usually have a “pressing closet,” with a bit of heat and moisture to ease any stiffness out of the line-dried clothes. Ours was built around the water heater – probably wouldn’t work with a modern one!
I can’t speak for anyone else, since I haven’t been in the body of anyone else. But I personally am more bothered by humidity than I am by heat. That means that when it is 100 degrees outside (and it has reached that many days this summer), I can be comfortable at 80 degrees in the house, because the AC is constantly running and therefore getting rid of the humidity. But, for instance, today was a high of 80 in my area. Because of this, I was sweating profusely even when the indoor temperature was 76 degrees, mainly because the AC wasn’t running as often. But perhaps other people are less disturbed by humidity. But I think my point (and others’) still stands that with extreme air conditioning, we condition ourselves to want it to be cooler and cooler. Go to another culture where they don’t use it so often, and you will be surprised by how comfortable people look hanging outside in the summer. They are just used to “real” air and not processed air like we have. Having said that, I love my processed air in moderation :).

If you’re on a fixed rate tariff with your current supplier, check to see if there’s an exit fee for leaving the contract early. If there is, you’ll need to factor this cost into your price comparison as it could swallow up some of the potential savings. If you can supply your tariff name when you get a quote, we can take your tariff into account when showing you the savings you could make.

**Replace your HVAC & furnace filters. **Most renters and homeowners overlook HVAC and furnace filters. However, when you take the time to look up at your vents, you are bound to see dust and residue building up in them. All you have to do is take off each individual vent cover and vacuum the vent and filter. If they look and feel like they need to be replaced, purchase new ones to help improve the air flow in your space. You could save $7-10 each month if you replace your filter regularly. If you rent an apartment, your maintenance staff should be doing this regularly for you.

But this year is different. According to the Lower Colorado River Authority, a nonprofit public utility in Central Texas, the 10 months from October 2010 through July 2011 have been the driest for that period since 1895, when the state began keeping rainfall records. Without rain, temperatures hit record levels in June and July, which were the hottest months on record statewide. As of August 5, Austin hit 100+ degrees 52 times this summer.
Perhaps my favorite aspect of the HiSense is how little noise it makes. While I certainly want an air conditioner in my home, I don't want to know that it's there — to that end, the quiet compressor and the cross-flow fan design results in a strong yet quiet airflow. If you have the fan set at its lowest level, you'll barely hear the unit. To get technical, it only reaches 47 dB(A) at this setting — for reference, libraries generally have a noise level of 40 dB(A).
“Southern Electric was great for me. They did the wiring in my new home as well as installed a great room ceiling fan (20ft ceilings) a few months later. I purchased the fan through them and when they arrived to install it we realized we had picked the wrong metal to match our house. It was entirely our fault, but Southern Electric swapped it out, no problem, and came back to install the new model a few weeks later. No additional fees.”
**Install a hot water heater timer with temperature controls. **Hot water heater timers are designed to schedule when to supply hot water to your home. This helps limit your consumption of hot water, and it could save you upwards of $200 a year if you decrease the temperature of your hot water as it is released. If you rent or live in an apartment building, ask your landlord if they use one and if they would be open to it.
All of these tasks should add up to noticeable savings and don’t require much time or money. (Fingers crossed that ceiling fan will be an easy fix!) Once I’ve taken these steps, maybe I’ll be ready for more. For now, it’s much too hot to think about new appliances, insulation, and replacing windows. Besides, I’ve got triple chocolate brownies to bake.
The nature and state of market reform of the electricity market often determines whether electric companies are able to be involved in just some of these processes without having to own the entire infrastructure, or citizens choose which components of infrastructure to patronise. In countries where electricity provision is deregulated, end-users of electricity may opt for more costly green electricity.
The Texas Senate Bill 7, passed in 2002, gave 5.6 million Texans the power to choose a retail electric provider (REP) to supply electricity to their home or business. This bill facilitated a competitive energy marketplace that 85 percent of Texans can capitalize on today. Energy choice is available to residents in Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth as well as other cities in Texas.
Fortunately, there are several universal ways people can save money on their energy bill, no matter where they live. Everyone knows to make sure their lights are off when a room isn’t occupied and to keep their heating and cooling to a minimum. But there are much more effective and strategic ways that you could be shaving significant money off of your energy bill every month. And, the best part - they don’t require you to sacrifice any of your daily comforts.
Utility companies are responsible for transmission and delivery of electricity even in energy deregulated parts of Texas and should be contacted in the event of a power outage. Your retail energy supplier may provide you competitive electric rates or exceptional customer service, but they cannot repair power lines or restore your service. In the case of an emergency, contact:
How does that work? Texas Energy buys electricity and competes in the market for the best price -- a competition that ultimately drives prices down and allows us to deliver more value for your money. In Texas, switching to a different electricity provider is kind of like changing to a different long distance company. When you switch to Spark Energy, the utility will continue to deliver electricity to your home but Spark Energy will handle all the billing, including the utility’s delivery fees and the electricity you actually use.

In the Northern Hemisphere, while south-facing roofs are typically where solar panels will generate the highest amount of electricity, panels on western-facing roofs will generate the most during peak hours. Because of this, it’s a good idea to talk to your solar installer about the best design for your system so that you maximize your solar savings under your TOU plan.
