I too have a KillAWatt meter and was surprised at how efficient my new fridge is. Thing is, the old fridge that I replaced was not a huge energy user, so replacing a 20 year old fridge to save big bucks on energy usage is not going to happen. So, it pays to attack the big energy hogs first, like heating/AC unit efficiency, and managing heating and cooling loads thru attic insulation and ventilation.

2. improve attic ventilation. I had to plug ridge vents because my ridge length of 16′ was not long enough for sole source of rooftop exhaust ventilation and I was getting “short-circuiting” between turtle vents and ridge vents. If your roof has a long ridge line, ridge vents are perfect. Also, if you have cathedral ceilings, chances are your soffit vents on the outside of those ceilings serve no function (other than to make you think they do), so you need to make up for that loss by adding more vents elsewhere.
Power to Choose has pages of search results with tiered energy rate electricity plans that follow a similar formula. When the Power to Choose site added a filter to exclude plans with minimum use fees/credits because of the public outcry against misleading electricity plans, providers came up with this new way to manipulate their advertised rates. Tiered rate plans can be incredibly complicated. When you look at an Electricity Facts Label (EFL) for a tiered energy use plan, you may see as many as three or four tiers of energy pricing.
If there’s one thing that remains consistent with any home or apartment, it’s the fact that you’ll be paying utility bills. Whether you’re splitting them with roommates or dealing with them on your own, the utilities have to get paid. If you feel like you’ve been spending too much of your hard-earned money on running water and keeping the lights on, there are some ways to lower your bill and save a little cash. Here’s our rundown of how to lower your monthly utility bills.

The majority of the rates advertised by electricity providers are for new customers only. These rates aren’t necessarily teaser rates but it is something to be aware of. When it comes time to renew your electricity contract, your provider will notify you at least 30 days before your plan expires and include a new offer. Chances are the new rate won’t be as good as what you’ve been paying. Even though your provider may say this is the ‘best offer available’ and ‘act now’ before it expires, you should still shop around just to make sure. But whatever you do, don’t ignore the contract expiration notification.

I live in Austin and we have allergies. I dry our clothes overnight in the bathrooms on hangars that then are transferred straight to the closet in the mornings. Underwear, socks, washcloths, and dish towels are dried on a plastic drying rack that can be folded up and put out of the way when needed. For large items like sheets, blankets and towels, I drape them over the stair railing overnight to dry. I have not used a dryer in several years.
Install ceiling fans. Yes, lowering your temperature in the winter and increasing it in the summer helps reduce your energy use via temperature change. However, ceiling fans can help distribute the air that may have risen to the ceilings of your home. The popular belief is that fans actually make the home cooler. However, fans simply help move the hot or cold air towards you.
Many people are aware that Iceland has the cleanest energy in the world by far. The island-nation generates 100% of its electricity from renewables such as hydroelectric and geothermal sources, and it’s also flirting with wind power. What those same people might not realize, however, is that this results in some of the cheapest electricity in the world.

The overall project consisted of two distinct separate rebuilds of nearly 7.5 miles of new 138kV single and double circuit transmission line that totaled 53 structures, 26 of which were on concrete pier foundations. The overhead division worked closely with our substation division who were tasked with the associated station work. This collaboration allowed New River Electrical to successfully navigate a very complex project schedule.

I had an energy management computer installed on my house in Arizona. Company who installed it is called Advanced Home Systems (www.cheaperutilitybill.com). Some friends told my wife and I about this and it has literally changed our life. Conventional thought process on lowering your utility bills is to use electricity. An energy management computer lets you use the same or more energy but at a lower cost. I know, sounds too good to be true or a gimmick. Former CEO of APS (largest electric co. in AZ) has it on his home. My summer bills used to be around $450 (2600 sf with a pool). My new bills this summer were under $300. And, I used to keep my house around 81 degrees during the day. I now keep my house at 72 degrees 24/7 and still saved that much money. Again, sounds too good to be true. Check out the website and read about this. Energy computers are not a new concept, they are just traditionally used by larger businesses and not residential customers.
How many times have you been somewhere on a hot day in which the air condition was on so high that you had to put on more clothes to warm up? It’s all too common, and maybe you even have the AC set in such a way in your home. Give it some thought. Rather than paying a fortune to freeze yourself, or even to keep it cooler than your body really needs, lower your electric bill by simply raising your thermostat. Our bodies are made to adjust to our surrounding environment. Let your body do its job. And if you want to go even further, turn on a fan to keep cool so that you can turn the temperature on the AC up even further, or can even turn it off altogether. Blowing air on yourself takes a lot less energy than turning hot air into cold air.
Fluorescent bulbs may be more expensive initially, but they are definitely worth the investment. A single standard incandescent lightbulb can cost the same to operate as six to 10 fluorescent bulbs—and the fluorescents last about 10 times longer. There are lots of new shapes and types, including attractive compact units that give off a pleasing, soft illumination like traditional bulbs. But "be sure your electric eyes and timers are rated for fluorescent," says Alan Muenzel, owner of DAM Home Inspections, Salt Lake City.
For example, in 2012, Hawaii residents had the highest average residential electricity rate in the United States (37.34¢/kWh), while Louisiana residents had the lowest average residential electricity costs (8.37¢/kWh). Even in the contiguous United States the gap is significant, with New York residents having the highest average residential electricity rates in the lower 48 U.S. states (17.62¢/kWh).[6]
I grill extra on the weekends, then reheat in the microwave during the week. Saves time and less heat in the house, but probably a toss up on electricity savings. Also, that extra basement or garage freezer will use less electricity the fuller you keep it. But use bags of ice to fill it so you don’t lose a fortune in food if the power is out for an extended period. Plus you won’t run out of ice when friends drop over. When you return from errands on really hot days, park your car in the drive for a couple hours to let it cool there instead of in your garage. use the delay timer on the dishwasher to run it at night. Plant trees to shade your outside AC unit if it is exposed to afternoon sun. Also helps reduce outside watering needs in other areas.
Bill credits are helpful if your electricity usage stays within a very predictable range every month. That’s a tall order with the brutally hot Texas summers. Electricity providers offer bill credits on some of their plans and strategically place these bill credits in order to create an unusually low rate per kWh so that they rank higher on comparison shopping websites. Even though Power to Choose gives you the ability to filter out plans with bill credits, they still exist.
Additionally, Robert Hammond, in December 1881, demonstrated the new electric light in the Sussex town of Brighton in the UK for a trial period. The ensuing success of this installation enabled Hammond to put this venture on both a commercial and legal footing, as a number of shop owners wanted to use the new electric light. Thus the Hammond Electricity Supply Co. was launched. Whilst the Godalming and Holborn Viaduct Schemes closed after a few years the Brighton Scheme continued on, and supply was in 1887 made available for 24 hours per day.
Raising your refrigerator temperature by a few degrees can save you hundreds of dollars a year. The fresh food section of your fridge only needs to be at 36-38 degrees Fahrenheit, and many times fridges are programmed at two to five degrees lower than necessary. As for your freezer compartment, you only need to set it to between zero and negative five degrees Fahrenheit.
Energy bills can get extremely high, especially in large houses with multiple residents. There are a number of ways to reduce the amount of your electric bill, ranging from negotiating a lower rate for your energy from your electricity provider to purchasing energy efficient appliances. Depending on how much time and money you invest, you can generate a substantially lower electric bill for yourself, and even a few simple measures can reduce the amount of the bill by up to 30%. A lower bill also represents savings for the environment as well, since it indicates that you are using less energy, as a general rule.
Many utility companies offering TOU rates allow residential customers to opt into it, but this isn’t always the case. California is the first state to require that everyone who installs a solar panel system has to switch to a TOU rate plan under their net metering 2.0 program. Time-of-use electricity pricing is a common option for commercial buildings as well, especially if tenants have flexibility in when they can use the most electricity.
