Whether you’re considering time-of-use plans or not, going solar will help you save money on electricity. The EnergySage Solar Marketplace makes it as easy as possible to compare solar pricing from a variety of installers in your local market. Alternatively, if you want to start investigating solar with some estimates of what it may cost and save you in electricity bills overtime, check out our Solar Calculator.
The local electric company is the utility – that’s the company who owns the infrastructure, including the poles and power lines that deliver electricity to your home. They are who you call if your power goes out or there's an emergency. But in almost every city in Texas, you must choose another company to supply that energy, called a Retail Electric Provider (REP). These REPs, like Spark Energy, allow you to choose electricity plans that offer competitive prices and plans to meet your needs.
I moved into a new, larger apartment this year, during the hottest and longest summer I've spent in Los Angeles. The heat was unyielding, and so was the air conditioning. When my first electric bill came, it soared to heights I didn't even expect. When I looked at common solutions, everything cost money. Solar panels cost a pretty penny and energy-conserving outlets aren't cheap either. While I could measure my energy costs, I'd need to spend a lot of time and money I don't have. I'd also have to significantly reduce the way I used my air conditioning, computers, and appliances. Nothing seemed ideal, so I decided to find out if I could lower my bill simply by using everything more efficiently. I found out that I could, and you can too.
The electric power industry is commonly split up into four processes. These are electricity generation such as a power station, electric power transmission, electricity distribution and electricity retailing. In many countries, electric power companies own the whole infrastructure from generating stations to transmission and distribution infrastructure. For this reason, electric power is viewed as a natural monopoly. The industry is generally heavily regulated, often with price controls and is frequently government-owned and operated. However, the modern trend has been growing deregulation in at least the latter two processes.
If you’re looking for a new electricity deal, you’re not alone: 319,000 electricity customers switched energy supplier during January 2018, according to OFGEM*. Shopping around for the best electricity deal is simpler than you might think – but there are bound to be a few questions. Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about comparing electricity deals.
If your major appliances or air conditioners are more than 10 to 15 years old, they are definitely costing too much to run. Modern appliances that conform to Energy Star efficiency are 10 to 20 percent cheaper to operate than other products, which will add up to big savings on your electric bills. In fact, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, buying a new air conditioner with an energy efficiency rating (EER) of 10, to replace an older one rated at 5, can halve the cost of cooling that room.
Additionally, Robert Hammond, in December 1881, demonstrated the new electric light in the Sussex town of Brighton in the UK for a trial period. The ensuing success of this installation enabled Hammond to put this venture on both a commercial and legal footing, as a number of shop owners wanted to use the new electric light. Thus the Hammond Electricity Supply Co. was launched. Whilst the Godalming and Holborn Viaduct Schemes closed after a few years the Brighton Scheme continued on, and supply was in 1887 made available for 24 hours per day.
Keep the thermostat as cool as you comfortably can during the winter. You should also acquire a programmable thermostat, if you don't already have one, and set the temperature lower at night. Not only will this lower your electric bill, it will also help you sleep, since cooler temperatures promote healthy sleep. Close off rooms you do not use frequently as well, rather than trying to keep them at the same temperature as the rest of the house.
When I placed the evaSmart on my bedside table for the evening and filled its little tank to the brim with water, I managed to sleep through the night even with all the windows closed and the temperature outside slowly climbing. In fact, the only time I did wake up in the night was to turn down the unit a bit, as I found the fan to be a little too effective.
WRT sealing: We used a temperature gun last winter to determine where we were losing the most heat. Our windows and doors are mostly surprisingly well sealed, and the ones that aren’t have issues in the wall which silicone is not going to fix. However our WORST locations were simply protrusions in the ceiling, specifically around lighting and vents. Mike Holmes (for you DIY junkies) also frequently finds gaps in insulation and so forth. Some of these changes you can make yourself, others you’d want a pro, but there are ways to evaluate the situation so you can be sure your money and energy are spent in such a way to maximize your value.
When you have a choice between using the microwave or an electric stove, always use the microwave, which can consume as much as 90 percent less energy. For example, it takes 18 times the electricity to bake a potato in a regular oven than in a microwave, according to the Edison Electric Institute. If you don't like to microwave, consider using a toaster oven for baking or roasting small items. Incidentally, a convection oven speeds cooking by about 35 percent (reducing the amount of electricity used) by using a small fan. Looking to skip the oven altogether? Most of the electricity plans listed above are variable rate plans, meaning the prices you are changed can change at the retailer’s discretion. Some energy providers also offer fixed rate plans, whereby you can lock in competitive prices now with the aim of saving in the long run. Fixed rate plans are usually only offered by the big three power companies. However, EnergyAustralia and AGL are currently the only retailers to offer NSW households a fixed rate deal with their Secure Saver and Essentials plans respectively. In this case, usage and supply rates are locked in for two years, which could prove a financially beneficial move in the long run.

If you have central air conditioning and/or heat, check the vents in your home. Some may be closed. It never occurred to me that any vent would be closed because I would never close them. I just assumed they were open. In reality, nearly every vent in my home was closed. After opening them all up, the air conditioner no longer struggled to keep the apartment cool or kept running after reaching its target temperature. Some believe that closing vents can reduce energy consumption by preventing the need to cool or heat a particular room. That's actually a myth: closing vents will actually raise your energy costs.
