A few other people mentioned that 80 degrees is not an unreasonable thermostat setting. We keep ours set at 80 during the day, and as long as we have a few fans to circulate the air and we wear shorts, it’s perfectly fine. What I don’t like is going to someone’s house where they keep it so cool that you can’t even wear summer clothing like t-shirts and shorts without freezing. At night, we turn it down to 74. That’s about as warm as we can keep it and still sleep comfortably. We also turn it to 76 or 77 if we have company.
Anyway, the $800 Whirlpool Gold we replaced it with was a peice of junk and its Energy Star rating was a joke. We had to basically wash the dishes before they went in and then we had to heat the water going into the unit by running the faucet until the water was hot (per the manual!). Our water bill actually went up $5 a month. We got rid of that dishwasher and replaced it with a $2k Miele, which works fine, but we have to scrape the food which we didn’t have to do with the old Kenmore.
In the winter, I keep my thermostat on 62. Often, I don’t even turn the heater on until late November or early December. I figure that between my low temp in the winter and the months without anything at all in the spring and fall, that I can afford to spend a ton on a/c to keep cool in the summer. So I cut back spending on things I don’t care about (heat) so I can spend more on what I do care about (a/c). *grin* I live in KS.

With a product like TP-Link's smart plugs, you can easily turn anything that's plugged into them on or off with your smartphone, or better still, your voice. So the next time you're left wondering if you remembered to turn off the hallways light when you went to work or realized that you meant to unplug the coffee maker to save just a bit of energy (and money), you can both check and take action with the touch of a button.
More energy efficient appliances will also lower your electric bill. You may not want to replace all of your appliances at once, but as they wear out, look for appliances with recommendations from organizations like Energy Star. High efficiency washers and dryers can save you a great deal of money, as can refrigerators and hot water heaters that are designed to use less energy. As a general rule, gas is cheaper than electricity for heating and stoves, and you may want to consider switching to gas for these appliances if possible. You can also get a lower electric bill by installing solar panels, along with a passive solar water heating system.

Like any seasoned Tejano, you’ve probably heard tell of variable rate electricity plans. Just like fixed rate electricity plans, variable rate plans have pros and cons. Basically, as market prices go up and down, so does your electricity rate. This can be good if you ride the right energy market waves. Be careful, however, because variable rate plans can also burn you if prices shift dramatically like sometimes happens in the wake of natural disasters and other unforeseeable events that impact energy supply costs.

You may be asking yourself: What the heck does “fixed rate electricity” mean and why should I even think about getting it? By choosing a fixed rate electricity plan, you’ll get more price consistency month-to-month and probably even save a little cash over time because your electricity rate stays the same for the duration of your utility contract.1
To save money, do a nightly sweep through the house to make sure all your electric devices are turned off before you go to bed. It may be a pain, but the savings from simply turning everything off can add up quickly. For example, just leaving your cable box plugged in and not on for a year would cost you $17.83, according to the Department of Energy. Try turning off your cable box (and other devices) between uses and watch the savings climb.
If your central air conditioner is more than 12 years old, replacing it with an Energy Star model can cut your cooling costs by 30 percent and save maintenance costs. The payback for replacing a 12-year-old system is typically about eight years. An air conditioner’s efficiency level is measured by the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). The higher the number, the more efficient the unit. A 13 or 14 SEER rating is considered high efficiency.
Here’s what I did: 1. add insulation to the attic (I live in Houston). Cost $300 after federal subsidy for a 2200 square foot house (I added R-30 for a total of R-50, really thick and fluffy in the attic!). 2. add ridge vent on the attic to increase air flow in the attic and lower the attic temperature. 3. add soffit vents (in my case I quadrupled them). Increases air flow in attic (my attic temperature on a summer afternoon went from 130 degrees to 114 degrees, lowering the heat transfer into the house and lowering the time the AC had to run, equalling big money. 4. the above changes lowered my electricity bill 40% in summer, which lasts five full months in Houston. 5. shop electricity rates if you live in a deregulated electricity market. Prices range over a 40% swing, so it’s easy to save. 6. Don’t overly sweat the small stuff; try a Kill-a-Watt meter and find out how much your electronics really use. I was shocked at how little my refrigerator really used (and the advice to keep the freezer full? I tried it and over a week there was zero difference in the Kill-a-Watt reading). 7. Get an efficient AC unit. I installed a unit with a 15 SEER rating. It runs a lot but is very efficient based on my electricity bill.

It’s worth noting that you can switch for free with no exit fee 42-49 days before the end of your contract. Under Ofgem’s standards of conduct, energy firms have to give you between 42 and 49 days’ notice of your tariff ending. You can use this time to decide whether to stick with them, or switch. If you decide to switch, you won’t be charged an exit fee.

To save money by making sure you’re only paying for the sewer capacity you’re using, many utilities offer the option to get a separate meter to measure water usage for irrigation, swimming pools and other outdoor uses, says Liskey. Once installed, the meter will be read every month by your utility company and its reading subtracted from your sewage bill.

Are they going to increase their rates any time soon? Most suppliers keep their rate rises in line with the cost of living but have the ability to change rates with just 28 days notice. Some energy retailers may tell you that they don’t have a cap on their rate rises—if this is the case, then avoid these suppliers, as this signals that they could be looking at increasing their rates in the near future. Always look for affordable electricity options.

In states with energy choice, the open market is not only for residents. Businesses also can take advantage of pricing and plans available through an energy supplier. In some states, only business customers have energy choice. Across the United States, the average business consumes 6,278 kWh of electricity per month and receives a bill of nearly $655.
New River Electrical Corporation has recently participated in rehabilitation of the TNT plant located inside the Radford Army Ammunitions Plant. The TNT plant has not been in operation since the mid-1980s. It is the only plant in the United States capable of producing TNT. The majority of the rehabilitation has taken place in 2004 and 2005. It was an estimated cost of $130 million total of all trades to complete the rehabilitation.

2. improve attic ventilation. I had to plug ridge vents because my ridge length of 16′ was not long enough for sole source of rooftop exhaust ventilation and I was getting “short-circuiting” between turtle vents and ridge vents. If your roof has a long ridge line, ridge vents are perfect. Also, if you have cathedral ceilings, chances are your soffit vents on the outside of those ceilings serve no function (other than to make you think they do), so you need to make up for that loss by adding more vents elsewhere.

P.S. one thing we do with line drying might work to reduce regular allergen accumulation and some lint buildup: sometimes we’ll line dry heavy clothes, such as jeans and towels, to damp, then finish them in the dryer. I do know it takes off a lot of lint when I do that. My brother dries a lot of his uniform clothes indoors, on hangers in the bathroom, and has had good luck with that.
Problem is, waiting a long time to change your filter makes your HVAC system less efficient and costs you more in electricity. Dirt and neglect can even cause your expensive HVAC unit to die an untimely death, said Maria Vargas, spokeswoman for the EPA’s Energy Star program. Instead, spend a little more to get a reusable filter than you can simply hose off when it gets clogged up with dust and other particles.

It was later on in the year in September 1882 that Edison opened the Pearl Street Power Station in New York City and again it was a DC supply. It was for this reason that the generation was close to or on the consumer's premises as Edison had no means of voltage conversion. The voltage chosen for any electrical system is a compromise. For a given amount of power transmitted, increasing the voltage reduces the current and therefore reduces the required wire thickness. Unfortunately it also increases the danger from direct contact and increases the required insulation thickness. Furthermore, some load types were difficult or impossible to make work with higher voltages. The overall effect was that Edison's system required power stations to be within a mile of the consumers. While this could work in city centres, it would be unable to economically supply suburbs with power.[1]
Based on this specific cost calculation, we can see that EnergyAustralia, Amaysim and Powerdirect currently offer the cheapest electricity rates in Sydney after all their conditional discounts have been applied. Other big energy companies such as AGL and Alinta Energy are not far behind. It’s worth noting, however, that most of the cheapest electricity products in this list are for a limited benefit period of just one or two years. Once this time is up, the discount is no longer available and your bills will increase unless you contact your provider to renew your contract.
Use smart power strips: Some electronic gadgets never truly power off; instead, they sit in standby mode using a trickle of power that can add up over devices and time. These are usually — but not exclusively — items with a remote control, because the remote sensor needs power while waiting for your input. Plug these electronics into a smart power strip, which cuts off the current when the devices aren’t in use.
The Entertainment system is the most energy sucking system I have; huge tv with several video game, music and DVD systems plugged in. These are plugged into a wall outlet that is controlled by a switch. When I’m leaving the room, the switch goes off and the power to the appliances are killed — the TV (while turned off) alone eats enough power to power my desktop computer.
The average American pays over thirteen-hundred dollars a year for electricity. This means that electric bills alone can take upwards of 5-10 percent of a person’s income. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of things involved in one simple bill. And figuring out exactly what to focus on is the most difficult part of lowering your monthly energy costs.
Use heat-generating appliances at night. I know this should be a no-brainer, but I like to bake, and because I work at home, I can bake whenever the mood strikes. But obviously a hot oven in the heat of the day forces the AC to work harder to keep the house at a comfortable temperature. The same goes for clothes dryers and dishwashers. Use these at night when outside temps are cooler.

Despite the PUCT’s efforts to curtail teaser rates by giving users the ability to filter out minimum usage fees/credits, teaser rates still overwhelm the Power to Choose site to the point it’s easy for customers to be misled on what they’re actually getting. On a recent visit, the first five pages of the default search for our zip code was filled with what we consider to be teaser rates (and that was with bill credit filter on!)

With the exception of Hillsboro, the incorporated towns in Loudoun County provide water and sewer service to residents of the towns and some outlying areas.  Rates vary between towns and between in-town and out-of-town service areas.  It is best to check rates before the first water bill arrives.  Town residents with questions or problems regarding these services should contact their town government.
There are over 60 different energy suppliers competing for your business on any given day in Texas. Many of these electric companies have websites that are confusing and nearly impossible to navigate, their rates and fees hidden by dense industry jargon and misleading advertising. Who has the spare the time to sort through the choices spread out over all these different sites and companies?

As your current bulbs burn out, replace them with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) or LED bulbs. Personally – I don't like the light from CFL's, so I'm trying to buy LED's as my current light bulbs die… and they're MUCH cheaper than they used to be! Check out this 6-pack on Amazon! And it's nice to know I can go another decade or so before I have to replace them again.
