The SCC issued an order in a November 2014 ruling in the company’s biennial review that left base rates unchanged. Based on a review of 2012-2013 earnings, the SCC also required a $5.8 million refund credit to customers over a six-month period beginning in late January 2015. During the 2015 session of the Virginia General Assembly, legislation was approved that will keep Appalachian’s base rates (which comprise about 60 percent of the bill) unchanged until at least 2020.
All forms of electricity generation have positive and negative aspects. Technology will probably eventually declare the most preferred forms, but in a market economy, the options with less overall costs generally will be chosen above other sources. It is not clear yet which form can best meet the necessary energy demands or which process can best solve the demand for electricity. There are indications that renewable energy and distributed generation are becoming more viable in economic terms. A diverse mix of generation sources reduces the risks of electricity price spikes.

It's important to make sure the walls and windows of your home aren't leaking air. Just like your refrigerator shouldn't be left open to cool the whole kitchen, your house shouldn't be cooling the yard. Buy a cheap roll of weatherstripping tape, and seal up those doors and windows. Also, make sure to clean the filters on your air conditioning vents at least once a month — this will help your air conditioning be more efficient.

Keep your thermostat at a level temperature. Make sure to increase your thermostat temperature during cooler seasons, and decrease in warmer seasons. The general rule is to turn your thermostat back about 7°-10°F from what you would normally set it at in that season for 8 hours a day. This way you can reduce your energy use enough to save upwards of 10 percent a year on heating and cooling. You can simply change the temperature before you leave for work.

I live in Austin and we have allergies. I dry our clothes overnight in the bathrooms on hangars that then are transferred straight to the closet in the mornings. Underwear, socks, washcloths, and dish towels are dried on a plastic drying rack that can be folded up and put out of the way when needed. For large items like sheets, blankets and towels, I drape them over the stair railing overnight to dry. I have not used a dryer in several years.
Dishwashers require some heat to do a good job. Part of the cleaning process requires quite a bit of hot water. That said, drying your dishes doesn't. Most machines employ a heated dry method that you can disable. Heated drying helps prevent water spots on your dishes, but so do rinsing agents like Jet Dry. If you already use a rinsing agent, you can forego the heated dry method. This is because rinsing agents coat your dishes and make it difficult for water to stick to them for a limited time. Your dishwasher releases the agent later in the cycle so it can clean effectively first, too, so you don't have to worry about water being repelled at the wrong time. If you've never used a rinsing agent before, it's very easy. You simply look for a small, often circular cap on your dishwasher's door, unscrew it, and load it up with your rinsing agent until full. Then just stop the dishwasher once it enters the heated dry stage and let everything dry on its own.

So in just 180.2 hours of use, I’ve made up for the cost of a bulb. Anything after that is pure savings compared to if I still had an incandescent bulb in its place. Sure, a hardly-used guest room might see limited use over its lifetime, so I still think your point has merit, but CFLs really should be considered for the majority of lightbulbs in the home.

You can sort, filter, and shop by pricing at YOUR specific usage level, which lets you shop and compare electricity plans based on the rates you’ll actually experience on your bill, inclusive of hidden fees and taxes. This ensures you’re not misled by the cheaper rates often advertised by electric providers…those “teaser rates” associated with higher usage levels that many households never enjoy because their usage level never reaches that pricing tier.
The schedule mandated working two shifts with many complex crane lifts and rigging maneuvers in order to place the new equipment within the close confines of the work site, all the while maintaining the required close 4mm alignment tolerances necessitated by the GIS equipment specifications.  The project was successfully completed on time and under budget through the fall of 2005 and spring of 2006.
In terms of renewable sources like solar and wind, weather impacts supply. California’s duck curve[cite] shows the difference between electricity demand and the amount of solar energy available throughout the day. On a sunny day, solar power floods the electricity generation market and then drops during sunless evening, when electricity demand peaks.[117]

Excessive Total Harmonic Distortions (THD) and not unity Power Factor (PF) is costly at every level of the electricity market. Cost of PF and THD impact is difficult to estimate, but both can potentially cause heat, vibrations, malfunctioning and even meltdowns. Power factor is the ratio of real to apparent power in a power system. Drawing more current results in a lower power factor. Larger currents require costlier infrastructure to minimize power loss, so consumers with low power factors get charged a higher electricity rate by their utility.[130] True power factor is made of displacement power factor and THD. Power quality is typically monitored at the transmission level. A spectrum of compensation devices[131] mitigate bad outcomes, but improvements can be achieved only with real-time correction devices (old style switching type,[132] modern low-speed DSP driven[133] and near real-time[134]). Most modern devices reduce problems, while maintaining return on investment and significant reduction of ground currents. Power quality problems can cause erroneous responses from many kinds of analog and digital equipment, where the response could be unpredictable.
Loudoun County does not provide curbside pick-up of either garbage or recycling.  However, there are many private contractors available.  Towns, community associations, and individuals often hire these contractors to provide such a service.  The county does maintain a public landfill and numerous recycle drop-off centers. The Waste Management Division of the Department of General Services provides detailed information on options and locations.

That assumes a lot of things, as another poster said. Here in dallas its never been lower than eighty at nite during our heat wave, and sometimes as high as nintely. There is no “opening up the house” So yes,. you certainly need air conditining in my part of the world. On the other hand, we live in the land of plentiful natural gas, so my heating bills are very minimal.

Go retro with a crock pot. Speaking of ovens, there's nothing that heats up our house faster than a preheating oven and a few pans on the stove top. Slow cookers, on the other hand, use less energy and won't turn your kitchen into, well, an oven. I think the crock pot often gets a bad rap thanks to the old way of slow cooking: bland recipes created from canned and prepackaged ingredients. But the slow cooker is enjoying a quiet revival, and with it we're seeing better recipes, such as this pulled-pork sandwich and these triple chocolate brownies.
Ideally, a load of laundry should pack in as many articles of clothing as possible, but stuffing your washer until it's full isn't a good idea. While the washer can likely fit whatever you throw at it, if you're using a machine drier afterwards you need to consider what it can handle as well. If there's little room for movement in the drier, the hot air won't be able to do its job and you may have to run the drier twice. That's really inefficient, so make sure your load of laundry doesn't take up too much room in the drier before you wash it. A good rule of thumb is to leave about 25% of the drier unfilled so there's room for movement, and even more if you're drying large bed sheets or blankets. Many driers are larger than washers, and your clothing takes up less space when wet, so your clothing will always fit. Measure for 25% before you wash to ensure you leave enough room for good air flow.

If you're lucky enough to have a ceiling fan, running it in the correct direction makes this easy. When it's hot, the fan should spin counter-clockwise to push the hot air up and out. When the weather turns cold, instead spin the fans clockwise to trap heat inside. You'll often find a switch on your ceiling fan to choose a direction, so consult your fan's manual to find out where it is.

Many homeowners are considering installing energy storage for their home not only as a source of backup power during grid outages, but also to combat time-of-use electricity rates during peak hours. With a backup battery, you can charge your battery during off-peak hours when electricity rates are at their cheapest, and then discharge and use electricity that has been stored in the battery during off-peak hours.
