It's important to make sure the walls and windows of your home aren't leaking air. Just like your refrigerator shouldn't be left open to cool the whole kitchen, your house shouldn't be cooling the yard. Buy a cheap roll of weatherstripping tape, and seal up those doors and windows. Also, make sure to clean the filters on your air conditioning vents at least once a month — this will help your air conditioning be more efficient.

New River Electrical completed the 2.4 mile circuit utilizing 230kV 3200kcmil XPLE lead sheath cable. This project is yet another landmark project for the US market. The installation of a 4600 foot length of cable under the Patuxent River was the challenge of this project and the proving ground for solid dielectric cable installations. Cable reel weights (138,900 lbs.) and sizes (13’4” Tall x 18’ wide) were challenges successfully overcome.

The schedule mandated working two shifts with many complex crane lifts and rigging maneuvers in order to place the new equipment within the close confines of the work site, all the while maintaining the required close 4mm alignment tolerances necessitated by the GIS equipment specifications.  The project was successfully completed on time and under budget through the fall of 2005 and spring of 2006.


Air-dry clothing. I like this idea in theory. J.D.'s wife Kris credits line-drying her laundry with reducing their average daily electricity cost from $2.50 to $1.85. I've yet to try it because I'm concerned about allergens in the air getting into our clothing, and here it's always allergy season. But if you have the room to spare, you could dry clothing inside on hangers. We've enough space in our laundry room to hang quite a bit of clothing, so I'll start air-drying more.
I found a decent pair for $15 at Burlington Coat Factory and pinned them over a sliding door that lets lots of light into my house. (I’ll hang them properly…..eventually. )Granted they made the house darker, but as my house sits empty when I’m at work or out, that doesn’t bother me. And the difference they make to keeping the house cool is significant.

The first comment said to use heat causing appliances at night when the temperatures are cooler outside. That may be true & I’ve done that for my own comfort. It may not save money thought because it’s my understanding that power companies charge different rates for electrical power at different times of the day, afternoon & night being the most expensive. 3am until about 10am would probably be cheaper. I might not want to vacuum but the delay setting on your dishwasher would work at that time.

We had a 20 yr old furnace and AC when we replaced it with a 95% efficient unit this past December. We paid $5,000 after the federal credit. So far we have already saved hundreds and hundreds of dollars, and that is even after we kept the house at a more comfortable temperature in both seasons. If we had stuck with our previous 65 degrees and 79 degrees, we would have saved even more. Yes, we still have years before we make it back, but our house is MUCH more comfortable and with an older unit it could die at any time anyway.
Programmable thermostats are great, but are useless if someone is home all day. The main point is to set the temperature at an energy-saving setting when noone is home; however, the author is home all day so I can see her point. Also, we installed a programmable thermostat. I do love it and all the settings, but it is currently useless to us since one of us is home all day long; there’s no reason to program it right now.

Good stuff, although I disagree re: not buying the programmable thermostat. I consider it insurance against (my) human nature to forget to change the setting on my old non-programmable one, especially when stumbling off to work while my 1st cup of coffee is still working its way into my system. Programmables take less than half an hour to install and a good one costs less than $70 on Amazon.

I read on this blog last year about making some makeshift curtains from emergency blankets and tension curtain rods. Because I live in a short-term rental, I didn’t want to shell out alot of money for blackout curtains, so I bought the tension curtain rods at a yard sale and some of the space blankets and set them up in the windows where the hottest sun comes in. Even on 90 degree plus days, I haven’t used my air conditioning once. I have used it one day when the outside air temp hit over 100, but even then I could have it set warmer than I usually do. Also moving all cooking outside with electric appliances such as a toaster oven (I have even used it to make pies) and maybe an electric skillet or burner an radically reduce cooling needs if you have an outside outlet. My electric bills are nearly half what they were last year.
I used a kill-a-watt (energy meter) to check my energy usage. With both my cell phone chargers, they registered less than a penny of electricity use over a 24 hour period when my phone wasn’t plugged in. But I think the watts used depend on the charger. Check to see if your local library has a kill-a-watt you can check out — that’s how I got mine — and check your phone charger and other electronics. It’s a nice way to know exactly how much you’re spending to keep the TV/VCR/microwave etc plugged in. In my case, the microwave was a definite drain. I don’t remember the daily cost, but I do know my electricity bill went down when I unplugged the micro when not in use. I just used a power strip and turned it off unless I wanted to nuke something.

One such purchase was when the UK’s National Grid, the largest private electric utility in the world, bought New England’s electric system for $3.2 billion.[2] Between 1995 and 1997, seven of the 12 Regional Electric Companies (RECs) in England and Wales were bought by U.S. energy companies.[3] Domestically, local electric and gas firms have merged operations as they saw the advantages of joint affiliation, especially with the reduced cost of joint-metering. Technological advances will take place in the competitive wholesale electric markets, such examples already being utilized include fuel cells used in space flight; aeroderivative gas turbines used in jet aircraft; solar engineering and photovoltaic systems; off-shore wind farms; and the communication advances spawned by the digital world, particularly with microprocessing which aids in monitoring and dispatching.[4]
I used this method, and with a programmable thermostat for my central air and heat, I was able to lower my bill to about $75. The only exception to this was I left my lamps plugged in.
